Chapter 7

The snow was falling in earnest when they reached the cabin and Bowsie was conflicted.

Every ache in her body had fled the moment Nick touched her and it took all her willpower not to crawl into his lap and rest against his chest like a child. With the way he touched her, she didn’t think he’d object.

However, she didn’t want to walk into his family home acting like a weak or spoiled child. If his grandfather was hurt, this wasn’t an ideal time to make a bad first impression.

“Hey, cuz, stir your stumps. You’ve got people coming out of the house to stare,” Bets called. “Are these all friendly?”

Nick turned to look then sighed. “I don’t want to let you go but I can’t see from here. Can you stand?”

“Yes,” Bowsie said. “And without help, too. I’ll be fine if you want to let go to go look. I’ll be right behind you.”

“You might be fine but I won’t be.”

The look he gave her was enough to make Bowsie willing to face a dozen potential in-laws. She shoved off the blanket and slid to the edge of the bed where Nick helped her stand up. If he hadn’t been holding her hand, she wouldn’t have needed the assistance, but she didn’t want to him to let her go.

They walked to the front window of the mini-shuttle and looked at all the people who had come out of the house. It looked like she was going to have to face almost a dozen of her future inlaws.

“Do you know all those people, Nick?” Bets asked.

“I don’t recognize some of the littler ones,” Nick said. “But I suspect they were babes-in-arms the last time I saw them.”

“That’s quite the welcoming committee,” Bets said.

“How late am I?” Nick asked. “I’m just surprised they didn’t start an expedition to come find me.”

“They almost did,” Bets admitted. “We told them we had a better solution. What do you think of our better solution?”

“I’m a fan,” Nick said with a laugh. “I think the kids are going to want a look at it, too.”

“Well, I’m not going back without Steph so go ahead and bring them on board. It should be mostly kid proof.” Bets activated the controls to open the doors and let down the stairs a moment before Nick started for them.

As he was still holding her hand, she had no choice but to follow him to the open door. Her own preference would have been to hide behind him a little longer but he pulled her to his side and leaned out to wave at his family.

“What do you think of Santa’s new sleigh?” he called.

Cheerful shouts for Uncle Nick and demands to see something called a reindeer rang out from the crowd gathered in front of the cabin.

“Nick, get your ass down here and hug your mother,” a voice boomed out.

Bowsie froze and held her breath. She had to go out to see the people outside and suddenly her future was was directly in front of her.
